Sunless Tanning: Application Tips

Sunless Tanning: Application Tips

How to get flawless color every time.

PREPARATION:

The most important part of your tanning routine is the preparation. Cleanse, exfoliate and moisturize from head to toe the night before you plan on applying your self tanner.  The day of, make sure to keep skin clean, and avoid any lotion or oil based products. Any type of moisturizer will create a barrier between your skin and the tanner and will result in streaks and / or uneven color.

PAY ATTENTION TO THE DRIER PARTS OF YOUR BODY:

It is essential that you pay special attention to the extra dry and more coarse parts of your body - your elbows, wrists, hands, knees, feet, ankles and achilles heel. Before you apply your self tanner, apply a small amount of moisturizer to these areas. This additional hydration will serve as a barrier and ensure these parts of your body don’t over absorb the product and end up looking too dark. Reapply moisturizer immediately after to further blend the product into these areas.

FACE & NECK

All of our products can be used on the more delicate facial and neck skin. You can apply our products directly (remember less is more here), or mix them with your current facial moisturizer for a more subtle sun-kissed glow.

HANDS & FEET:

Since you are trying to mimic the natural sun, your focus should be on the tops of your hands and feet. Your palms, ankles, and sides of your hands and feet would not naturally see as much sun, so you will want to use less product here.

Start with your feet. Rub a minimal amount of product between your hands and gently apply in a sweeping (not circular) motion on the tops of your feet towards your toes, over your ankles, and lightly along the sides of your feet. Do the same thing for your hands. Using a minimal amount of product, gently apply in a sweeping motion on the top of your hands towards your fingers and then along the sides. Quickly interlock your fingers. To finish, take a damp washcloth and glide it over your palms, the sides of your hands and feet and in between your fingers and toes.

If you want to be extra careful, reapply moisturizer to these areas to help further blend the product into the skin and soften the color.

WORK YOUR WAY UP:

With any self tanning product, it will benefit you to start from the bottom up. Start at your legs and work your way up to your shoulders to prevent any creasing from bending over.

LESS IS MORE

Applying too much product can leave you with an uneven application or an unnatural looking result. Remember that a little product can go a long way, and you can always add more to deepen the color.

LET THE COLOR DEVELOP

Our gradual tanning lotion requires a 4 - 6 hour time period for the color to fully develop. During this time, avoid contact with water and do your best to not sweat, as both will affect how the product sets onto your skin. We recommend adding self tanning into your evening routine for ease and best results.

PROLONG YOUR TAN:

Moisturizing daily is key to maintaining a long lasting, natural looking glow. However, the specific ingredients in your moisturizer matter. Many body lotions contain a wide array of ingredients that harm your skin’s protective surface, causing allergies, sensitivity and inflammation. All of this drama leads to dryness, and dry skin will cause your tan to fade quickly and unevenly. Opt for a quality, hydrating moisturizer that is free of drying alcohols, fragrance, essential oils, silicones, colors, PEG’s & parabens. If you nourish and care for your skin properly, your color should last anywhere from 7 - 10 days. Learn more here.
