How To: Prolong Your Color
The Role of Moisturizers:
Our brand’s core ethos centers on this idea that nourished, hydrated skin will result in the most natural looking color. This is because our skin’s moisture levels not only affect how evenly a tan develops, but will also significantly affect how long your skin will hold the color and how evenly it will fade.
Beyond preserving your tan, moisturizing is simply essential for overall skin health. A quality moisturizer replenishes lost moisture, strengthens your skin's barrier, and keeps it healthy and resilient.
Our goal is for your skin to maintain consistent, even color and your everyday body moisturizer is going to play a key role. Unfortunately, not all moisturizers are created equal. Ingredients matter, and some may actually be drying out your skin and prematurely stripping your color away.
Here are some guidelines.
Ingredients To Avoid:
Drying Alcohols(INCI Examples: Alcohol Denat., Isopropyl Alcohol, Benzyl Alcohol)
Fragrance
(INCI Examples: Fragrance, Parfum)
Essential Oils | Fragrant Plant Extracts & Oils
(INCI Examples: Limonene, Geraniol, Citral, Farnesol, Geraniol, Limonene, Linalool, Hexyl Cinnamal, Citrus Reticulata (Organic Mandarin red) Peel Oil, Backhousia Citriodora (Lemon myrtle) Leaf Oil, Cananga Odorata (Ylang Ylang) Flower Oil)
Ingredients To Embrace:
Humectants
(INCI Examples: Glycerin, Hyaluronic Acid)
Humectants are ingredients that draw water (from the air and from the lotion) into skin and in turn, hydrate your skin cells.
Emollients
(INCI Examples: Non Fragrant Plant Oils such as Jojoba Oil, Sunflower Oil, Rosehip Oil, Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter; Fatty Alcohols & Acids such as Cetyl Alcohol, Stearic Alcohol, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cetearyl Olivate, Sorbitan Olivate)
Emollients are ingredients that help to soften, smooth, and moisturize the skin by filling in the gaps between skin cells. This creates a smooth surface and a protective layer on the skin, helping to prevent moisture loss. These help your skin retain moisture and stay soft. While emollients don’t necessarily add moisture to the skin like humectants do, they help to trap moisture that’s already in the skin by forming a protective barrier on the surface.
Occlusives
(INCI Examples: Petrolatum, Lanolin, Mineral Oil, Beeswax)
Occlusives are ingredients that create a physical barrier on the surface of the skin, which helps to trap humectants and emollients and the moisture associated with them and overall prevent water loss. They are thicker than emollients and often feel more protective. While these ingredients may not be listed in your current body moisturizer, they can be used in addition to if you are looking to lock in moisture.
Be Mindful Of The Self Tanning Products You Use:
It of course is equally as important to use quality sunless tanning products. Many popular sunless tanning products contain synthetic fragrances, essential oils, synthetic colors, drying alcohols, parabens, silicones, and PEGs—ingredients that are known for sensitizing and drying out the skin.
